Association for Talent Development - ATD

The Association for Talent Development (ATD) is a professional membership organization supporting those who develop the knowledge and skills of employees in organizations around the world. The association was previously known as ASTD.

ATD was founded as the American Society for Training Directors in 1943. The organization began in New Orleans during a training committee meeting of the American Petroleum Institute in 1942. The following year, a group of 15 professionals met for the first board meeting of the American Society for Training Directors in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
They became the governing body of the association, In 2000, the organization chose to refer to itself just by the letters ASTD, to underscore that it wanted to broaden its scope as a professional organization. Its mission statement is “Create a world that works better.”
On May 6, 2014, in order “to better meet the needs and represent the work of this dynamic profession,” the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) was rebranded to the Association for Talent Development (ATD).

How Are the APTD and CPTD Certifications Different?

As professional industry certifications, the APTD and CPTD assess your overall knowledge and abilities as a talent development professional. They are grounded in the Talent Development Capability Model™, which is a framework that outlines everything one needs to know and do to be successful in the field of talent development.

Many of our credential holders also get certified in vendor-specific methodologies or software (e.g. MBTI, ICF, DDI, Crucial Conversations, StrengthsFinder) etc., as needed for their specific roles. Those certifications are targeted to those organizations’ proprietary content, which is not content covered on the APTD nor CPTD exams.
